Welcome to The Wood Project, where we create custom timber dining tables made from wood we source and salvage ourselves. Our timber is found throughout Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, which we mill and kiln dry ourselves. We then recycle the timber into stunning dining tables that we customise to our client's needs, with unbeatable craftsmanship and attention to detail.

With so much beautiful timber going to waste, we knew we wanted to make a change. Our custom timber dining tables are 100% recycled and are a sustainable, affordable alternative to plantation wood furniture.

We have three different types of custom timber dining tables on offer, each defined by their structure and leg composition. We work with our clients to customise their chosen table to their needs and preferences, with various spec, timber and finish options available.

Slab Tables vs. Board Tables

We build both slab and board custom timber dining tables, with each option offering its own unique characteristics and charm. While in the past we only built slab tables, we’re proud to announce that we now build board tables for those that love timber and adore straight lines.

Slab tables have a more rustic and natural appearance and feel, immediately making a statement thanks to their live edges, notches and organic lines that tell the unique story of their origins and history. Board tables are competitively priced, with a modern appearance that is well suited to contemporary homes and sleek, polished interior designs.

No matter which of our custom timber dining tables you prefer, you’ll be rewarded with its rich, warm character and versatility. Our team will work closely with you to help you make the final decision, taking into account a variety of factors and making sure your table will feel right at home in your dining room.

Our Timber

At The Wood Project, it’s our mission to create custom timber dining tables that are sustainable and functional. With so much beautiful, high quality timber going to waste, we wanted to take this timber that would otherwise be discarded and create classic furniture pieces that will last for generations.

The timber we source comes from the tree removal sector, meaning that some of these trees are well over 100 years old. This gives them an edge that simply can’t be replicated, with years of history behind them that can now become a part of homes across the country. Every table we build is made with love and respect for our environment and has a unique appearance that can instantly elevate any home interior.

For custom timber dining tables with a difference, the team at The Wood Project has you covered. By buying furniture made from recycled wood, you’re lowering your carbon footprint and doing your part to keep Australian forests alive. Frequently Asked
Questions

Read some of the commonly asked questions from our customers about custom-made dining tables.

  • Right here, by us, in our Hastings Factory on the Mornington Peninsula

  • We locally outsource the manufacturing of the steel dining table legs. We design every set of legs for their unique slab top. This enables us to seamlessly fabricate the legs to showcase the beautiful timber top and ensures that legs will be hidden when there are large resin voids etc in the timber.

  • The quality and beauty of your timber slab table top can be easily maintained. The patina of the timber will change over time adding to the beautiful character of your timber top.

We recommend using a damp soft cloth, usually warm soapy water is enough. We recommend you refrain from ever using any type of cleaning solution or solvent on our timbers. Never leave spills for long periods and always wipe dry.

  • Our timber boards are cut from recycled trees, this means the timber has high feature such as sap veins and pockets, compression grain etc - often when you buy furniture from larger organisations the timber quality and grain can be very basic - you can not compare our timber to that.

  • It's preferable to avoid placing your indoor table in sunlight or in the direct path of air conditioning systems. The timber will naturally expand and contract, but sunlight & great variations in temperature & humidity will exacerbate this movement. We take the utmost care in drying our timbers to ensure optimal moisture content and with larger slabs in most cases we relief cut the underside of the slab to allow for movement.

  • We have timber board samples available that you can purchase from our online store. If you choose to go ahead, the cost of your sample will be deducted from your dining table quote.
