Looking for a beautiful and sustainable messmate dining table? Here at The Wood Project, we source and salvage logs throughout Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula and then mill and kiln dry them ourselves. Then, we create custom dining tables full of personality, character and years of history.

Because we salvage logs from tree removal our timber is 100% sustainable. With timeless design elements and impressive character, a messmate dining table can make a fabulous addition to any home. Because our tables are made from recycled timber, you can enjoy environmentally friendly and affordable furniture that’s personalised to match the rest of your home interior.

With three different styles of custom messmate tables available, we know that you’ll be able to find something that speaks to you and works as a fabulous centrepiece in your dining room. Each style of messmate dining table is defined by its structure and composition of its legs and can be customised with your preferred specs.

Slab Tables vs. Board Tables

At The Wood Project, we can create either a slab or board messmate dining table for your home that’s built to your specifications. While previously we only built slab tables, we’ve now expanded to board tables. This is so that our furniture can fit right at home in any interior, whether it’s modern, rustic or somewhere in between.

Slab dining tables are cut lengthwise and have a live edge of both ends, with notches, organic lines and an earthy, natural appearance that’s perfect for a home full of character and bold features. On the other hand, board tables have a more modern, minimalist feel and are more suited to contemporary homes with straight lines and a cool, polished appearance.

Whichever messmate dining table you select, we know that you’ll instantly fall in love with its practicality, style and charisma. If you need help deciding which option is right for your home, our team can help you make the final decision and create a custom table that fits perfectly with your interior.

Our Timber

The Wood Project firmly believes that quality timber should never go to waste. We look at every messmate dining table we build as a chance to do our part to prevent waste and give this stunning timber a new lease on life in homes across the country.

Because we source our wood from tree removal projects, some of these trees are over 100 years old. This gives each and every table we build its own story, with a life lived that will carry on for generations within your family. With a reclaimed appearance that can’t be mimicked by plantation wood, your messmate dining table will be a once in a lifetime product that can’t be replicated. Our tables are a labour of love and this can be seen in our impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail.

If you want a custom messmate dining table that’s environmentally sustainable and saves Aussie forests, look no further than The Wood Project. Contact us today to find out more about our projects and how you can lower your carbon footprint with timeless furniture pieces for your home.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Read some of the commonly asked questions from our customers about custom-made dining tables.

  • Right here, by us, in our Hastings Factory on the Mornington Peninsula

  • We locally outsource the manufacturing of the steel dining table legs. We design every set of legs for their unique slab top. This enables us to seamlessly fabricate the legs to showcase the beautiful timber top and ensures that legs will be hidden when there are large resin voids etc in the timber.

  • The quality and beauty of your timber slab table top can be easily maintained. The patina of the timber will change over time adding to the beautiful character of your timber top.

We recommend using a damp soft cloth, usually warm soapy water is enough. We recommend you refrain from ever using any type of cleaning solution or solvent on our timbers. Never leave spills for long periods and always wipe dry.

  • Our timber boards are cut from recycled trees, this means the timber has high feature such as sap veins and pockets, compression grain etc - often when you buy furniture from larger organisations the timber quality and grain can be very basic - you can not compare our timber to that.

  • It's preferable to avoid placing your indoor table in sunlight or in the direct path of air conditioning systems. The timber will naturally expand and contract, but sunlight & great variations in temperature & humidity will exacerbate this movement. We take the utmost care in drying our timbers to ensure optimal moisture content and with larger slabs in most cases we relief cut the underside of the slab to allow for movement.

  • We have timber board samples available that you can purchase from our online store. If you choose to go ahead, the cost of your sample will be deducted from your dining table quote.
